DAY TWENTY-THREE- Best Laid Plans

Today is day twenty-three. Crazy. We are sooooo close to the end.  Of course I mean the end of the 28 to Great challenge. Definitely not the end of this new lifestyle, because it seems like a good way to just live. EXCEPT for the ban on wine (how does my favorite cocktail get hurt in all this?). Wine called and told me it’s about to make a big comeback. In fact, it even suggested throwing itself a welcome home party  ;)

Today was tricky. I overcommitted myself and I’m choosing to blame it on my gorgeous friend, Margret, who works at HBO and who is also the womb behind Abel, the superbaby.  Although you would not guess by looking at her that she’s had a baby at all, let alone one the size of a Thanksgiving turkey.


Anyhoo, she asked me if I could watch Abel for the day and of course I jumped at the chance. You’ve seen him so I’m sure you would’ve done the same thing.  Plus, it’s been a few years since I’ve actually had one of my own. I somehow figured it would be really easy to snuggle a perfect, sweet smelling baby, do a few online classes, and keep up with everything else.  Keeping consistent with my current string of miscalculations, I figured wrong.

In case you don’t already know where this is headed, let me go ahead and tell you...

There were no classes. There were no new Barre3 recipes. There were no brisk walks.

In fact, there wasn’t much of anything.  Except for a whole lotta upper body strength training as I was lugging that little freeloader around from room to room like an 85-lb starving, boneless orangutan.
To be fair, he wasn't having the best day either.


Why didn’t I just set him down you ask?  Because every time I tried he would let out a sound similar to that deafening, high-pitched microphone feedback that makes you wish you were never born in the first place.

So naturally I would like to offer a little shout out to ALL the mothers of tiny (or just very young but heavy as an anvil) babies. If any of you are doing this challenge, I am literally begging you to give us all some tips and maybe share how it’s even possible.

For meals, I mostly grazed on the Barre3 "barre" and I grabbed some pieces of turkey along with a few carrots and sugar snap peas. I drank water. I also drank kombucha. I did not drink wine. Or a gin and tonic. Or sangria.  

For dinner I had take-out, which consisted of chicken breast and some broccoli. It was not my roasted broccoli and therefore it was not very good.


But tomorrow is a new day and hope springs eternal.

  1. I can totally relate to this! My 2.5 year old falls asleep every day when I go to pick up my kids and DOES NOT wake up. I have to carry him like a sack of flour for about 1/2 an hour every day, and he is starting to get heavy. Nice work Missy, sounds to me like you stuck to it pretty well and think of all the core and upper body strength training you did! Make sure to do some stretching, and maybe take a nice hot epsom salt bath too! If your kids will let you! :)

  2. I want to hug that bubble nosed baby (and give you a big high five). I am sure every Mom reading this can relate to your day. I know I do--and of course our girl Viva does! You are almost as awesome as Abel. Keep it up!

  3. I loved this post! I had many days when I wasn't sure how I'd balance the 28 to great challenge with spending time taking care of my 6 month old daughter. Somehow I was always able to get her into the kitchen with me (with help from the bjorn or ergo) while I made barre3 recipes, we went out for walks daily and then I'd do a work-out late at night after putting her and the house to bed. The program really helped me structure my days with her and helped me figure out how to balance work too. You're blog has been a delight to read. I hope you're still enjoying the new habits you now have :)
